Hygge Homework - this season’s cosiest combination

Hygge Homework - this season’s cosiest combination

Hygge - pronounced ‘hooga’ - is a word in Danish that describes a cosy, contented mood evoked by comfort and conviviality.

As the cold creeps in and the evenings get darker by the day, the shift in season can affect the motivation of many children (and grown-ups - hi🙋‍♀️). After a long day at school, walking home or playing sports in chilly weather, the last thing many kids will want to tackle with their best is homework.

My top tip, find ways to embrace Mother Nature and her whims. Make homework hygge.

The Danes are experts at this. Hygge is the glow of a lovely candle, the feel of a cosy blanket around you, the warmth and contentment of that first sip of tea.

Involving your child in planning and executing the ‘hygge homework’ plan will help get them invested in the idea as well as develop their independence as learners.

3 easy ways to make homework hygge:

Hygge Homework Corner: Create a dedicated homework corner with soft lighting (lamps, fairy lights, battery operated candles), comfy seating and a blanket.. This cosy space, free from distractions, can make study sessions enjoyable, less stressful experiences for both kids and parents.

The Hygge Soundtrack: task your child with finding their Hygge Homework soundtrack. Fire crackling sound effects? Classic FM? Opera? Something instrumental that will supercharge their focus during the homework session.

Dress for (cosy) success: many school uniforms can be layered, tight and let’s be honest, not optimal for comfort and/or learning. Changing out of school uniform can help kids shed the day and provide a reset after school before getting cosy and tackling that day’s homework tasks.
